A house or a place to stay is one of the basic needs for a man. Having a home, regardless if you own or rent one, would not only give you shelter to yourself but also to your belongings. By keeping everything safe, it is advisable if both the house and its contents are being insured properly.
Home insurance can be divided in to two types. They are the Building Insurance and the Building Contents Insurance.
Building Insurance is mainly an insurance that covers the main structures of the building and the built-in features of the building, e.g. the wall, roof, doors, built-in kitchen cabinets and bathroom suites. Some insurance policies do cover the outdoor features as well such as the garage, gazebos and the shed in the lawn. An adequate building insurance should cover the full cost of repair or build in the event of natural disasters like storm, falling trees, earthquakes or flood and accidents like fire, bursting pipes or even a vehicle crashed into the house that will damage the structure of it.

For all the remaining items or possessions in the building, they will then be covered by the Building Contents Insurance. This insurance covers the possessions that include the electrical appliances, furniture, clothes and even your favorite collection of DVDs against theft, damage or loss. Any other possessions outside the house or in the garage such as bicycles, flowerpots or garden tools in the shed will also be listed into the account to be insured. The building contents insurance is not compulsory and it is up to the homeowner to voluntarily take it to protect his own goods against unwanted tragedies. Do make a list of things and possessions inside and outside the house to estimate the amount of contents insurance needed to cover. It is advisable to check the value of the items with the insurance company and once the inventory list is done, the total amount of the list will determine how much insurance is required.
Prevention is always a better way than to cure. Do not take a risk in just losing out everything if anything ever happens to your belongings. By taking up insurance will give you a peace of mind that at least your possessions are secured.
